Twice a year, one of my favorite local haunts—Absolutely Art Gallery & Gifts in Catalina, Arizona—hosts a vibrant art festival. I am always honored to have my books stocked on their shelves, so I’m delighted whenever my schedule allows me to participate in their events.
While most of the artists set up their tents in the parking lot, I’ve been lucky enough to be among the group of artisans nestled inside the gallery. In the Arizona heat, a climate-controlled environment with no wind or rain is a true luxury! During this most recent show, the AC was particularly appreciated as it was a bit toasty outside.
Surrounded by Creativity
The best part of being stationed inside (aside from the cool air) is being surrounded by the incredible artwork mounted on the walls. Usually, my colorful book covers are designed to pop and grab the attention of passersby. However, in a gallery filled with professional paintings and photography, my books tend to “blend in” with the scenery!
I always admire the craftsmanship of my fellow artists, but a few pieces during this show really connected with me:
Right across from my table was a painting of a dog that looked remarkably like my Max. It made me feel a bit guilty for leaving him at home all day!

A beautiful butterfly painting reminded me of a story I’ve wanted to write for many years. Tentatively titled Bedtime for Butterflies, it’s a tale about Zebra Longwing butterflies on St. John and how they congregate to sleep together in meadows each night.

I’ve also admired this specific drawing of a coyote for several years now. It is lovely, though a bit out of my price range, so I make sure to visit it every time I’m in the store.
Beside me were intriguing photographs of cacti. The symmetry was stunning, and I could easily see them hanging in my own home.

A Lesson in Perspective
I have mounted shed antlers hanging over the TV in my front room, which I’ve adorned with small ornaments. Seeing the exquisite painted antlers and skulls at the show made me realize mine might be due for a professional upgrade!

One thing I noticed throughout the day is that in an art gallery, people are trained to look up. They admire the walls and the hanging masterpieces before they ever think to look down at the tables. While that isn’t always optimum for book sales, a day spent at Absolutely Arts is always a wonderful time. It’s a joy to be part of such a creative community.
