A T-Shirt, a Cold Case, and a Hometown Connection

Do you ever scroll through social media news feeds looking for a good story? As a dedicated mystery fan, I’m always drawn to articles about cold cases. Recently, a headline caught my eye: “Woman Identified 27 Years Later.” I instantly clicked, eager to know the technology that finally cracked the case. But as I read on, the story became chillingly personal.

The Clue in the Ravine

The original victim, a “Jane Doe,” was found in a ravine outside of San Diego, California, back in August 1998. The single biggest clue authorities had was the t-shirt she was wearing: a blue shirt with yellow lettering that read, “Woodruff Warriors 20-year Reunion 1971-1991.”

Wait. Woodruff Warriors?

My high school mascot was the Warriors. Our colors were blue and gold. Could there possibly be another Woodruff High School? I graduated from Woodruff High School in Peoria, Illinois, in 1975. This woman was wearing a shirt from my alumni!

Decades of Dead Ends

For 27 years, her identity was a ghost.

  • In 1998, police used all available technology to find a match. None existed.
  • In 2003, an artist created a facial reconstruction, but it led nowhere.
  • In 2008, DNA analysis was attempted, still without success.

She was described as a thin, 5-foot-2-inch white or Hispanic female in her 30s. Did I know her? Did she ever live in Peoria? She would have been ten years younger than me, but in a town like ours, it’s possible our paths crossed.

Solved by Genealogy

The true breakthrough came in 2022. Thanks to advanced genealogical analysis, investigators discovered she had potential family ties in San Diego and Michoacán de Ocampo in Mexico. The police posted about the case on social media, prompting potential family members to contact the authorities.

Finally, in a definitive identification 27 years after her remains were discovered, the woman was identified as Alicia Ledezma Sanchez, born May 13, 1968. She was positively matched to her son.

The Lingering Questions of a ‘Wild Town’

While the ID is a victory for the police, the Woodruff connection only deepens the mystery for me.

My high school, Woodruff, opened in 1937, named after Edward Nelson Woodruff, a man who served as Mayor of Peoria for decades. (Fun fact: I was once told the money to build the school came from taxes on prostitution—Peoria has always been a wild town, a place Al Capone famously practiced business before moving to Chicago.) WHS was closed in 2011, but its Warrior legacy remains. My graduating class just celebrated its 50th wedding anniversary.

But what about Alicia? The answers I’m desperately seeking:

  1. The Connection: What was Alicia Ledezma Sanchez’s link to the Woodruff Warriors? Did she live in Peoria? Did she have a significant other associated with the school?
  2. The Crime: What did her son know about her disappearance? Who murdered her, and why? Was her killer connected to my alma mater?

Alicia Ledezma Sanchez died much too young, surrounded by too much mystery. I may never know the full story, but I will keep researching. Perhaps, as technology and time advance, the answers to why she was wearing that reunion shirt and who killed her will finally come to light.
